Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif Saturday said that the country had the volume of 35,000 megawatts of power generation ample to meet its power needs but due to the conclusion of different power-producing plants run on gas and oil, different parts of Pakistan had been cladding load shedding for the last few days. Addressing the National Assembly, the prime minister said about 6,000 megawatts of hydroelectric power could be engender, which is linked to melting glaciers and water supplies.
CPEC coal-based plants and the new LNG plant
“CPEC coal-based plants and the new LNG plants that could produce about 5,000 MW power, counting the one set up during 2019, with a magnitude to generate 1250 MW, had been closed for the last 4 years, therefore it could not produce the power during the previous government.” He added that these projects had not been categorize by the previous government due to their incapacity, dishonesty and mismanagement.
The prime minister said the new plant could not generate electricity due to lack of ingress to gas or expensive oil. He said relevant ministries informed him. That they could not finalize LNG imports because no one in the previous government was ready to inspect such projects. Cost of LNG imports has multiplied, he said, and is now around $30-35 per unit.
PML-N had reached an agreement with Qatar to import LNG
PM Shehbaz Sharif recalled that during 2015-16, the previous government of PML-N had reached. An agreement with Qatar to import LNG, and what would have happened now if there was no agreement. The prime minister also recognize the personal intervention of Qatar’s emir to offer LNG at a discount. However, he confident people that they have been trying to dispose these serious issues. Shehbaz Sharif said he had several meetings with relevant ministries. The prime minister censure his precursor, saying the previous government was indifferent to public issues, calling them “hard-hearted”.
